WSTS upward forecast: The global semiconductor market is expected to exceed $1.5 trillion by 2026
2026-08-22

Recently, the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization released its semiconductor market forecast report for the spring of 2026, significantly raising its growth expectations for the global semiconductor industry in 2026 and 2027.
Data shows that, benefiting from the exceptionally robust market performance in late 2025 and early 2026, WSTS predicts that the global semiconductor market will achieve a year-on-year growth of 90% in 2026, with a total market size reaching $1.51 trillion.
The forecast provided by WSTS in December 2025 was $975.4 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 26.3%. However, given the faster-than-expected adoption of data centers, the organization significantly revised up its forecast, and this increase will also set a new historical record.
Specifically, according to the latest report, the accelerated growth of the global semiconductor market is primarily driven by the memory chip sector. Sales of memory chips are expected to increase by approximately 250% year-on-year in 2026, surpassing $800 billion. The sustained strong demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, high bandwidth memory (HBM), and accelerated computing platforms remains the core driving force behind the growth of the entire semiconductor industry.
Meanwhile, logic chips are expected to grow by 37% year-on-year in 2026, becoming another significant contributor. Other product categories are projected to exhibit relatively moderate expansion: microprocessors are expected to grow by 20% year-on-year, analog chips by 10%, discrete semiconductors by 8%, and sensors and optoelectronic devices by 3%.
Regionally, all major global markets are expected to achieve robust growth. Among them, benefiting from the high concentration of AI-related semiconductor demand and cloud computing infrastructure investment, the market size in the Americas is expected to more than double in 2026, with a year-on-year growth rate of 112%. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to grow by 87% year-on-year, while the European and Japanese markets are expected to grow by 58% and 28% respectively.
Looking ahead to 2027, WSTS predicts that the global semiconductor market will continue to grow by 27%, reaching a total size of approximately $1.9 trillion. From a regional perspective, the semiconductor market growth in the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions will lead the way in 2027.
Breaking down by category, memory chips are expected to continue leading market expansion in 2027, with a projected year-on-year growth of 32%; logic chips are expected to grow by 27% year-on-year. The report believes that the continuous deployment of AI systems, the construction of advanced computing infrastructure, and the increasing semiconductor content in various end markets will provide sustained growth momentum for the industry.
Industry insiders in the semiconductor sector analyzed for the Securities Times that WSTS's recent upward revision of the global semiconductor market forecast for 2026-2027 has sent a very clear signal: the global semiconductor industry is transitioning from a post-inventory reduction recovery phase to a structural revaluation phase driven by AI infrastructure.
"However, this reassessment is not uniform. AI is re-segmenting the semiconductor industry. The core chains of HBM, advanced logic chips, advanced packaging, high-speed interconnects, and AI servers are all being redefined in terms of price, capacity, and customer priority. The extent of benefit for power supplies, power, interfaces, passive components, etc. depends on whether they are integrated into AI systems. For general-purpose mature devices, it still comes down to inventory, delivery time, price, and real end-user demand," he believes.
